Youth Exchange “Reimagine Emotional Learning Across Xenocultures (RELAX)”
Mental health and emotional well-being have become critical concerns among young people across Europe and beyond. Many young individuals face emotional challenges rooted in social exclusion, cultural displacement, and a lack of safe spaces for authentic expression and dialogue.
The R.E.L.A.X. Project — Reimagine Emotional Learning Across Xenocultures — was designed to address these needs by using non-formal education, creativity, and intercultural exchange as powerful vehicles for emotional growth and resilience.
Bringing together young people from Germany, Romania, Italy, Latvia, and Turkey, the project created a diverse and inclusive environment where participants could explore emotional well-being through culturally sensitive and participatory methods.
The project was built around three core pillars: empowering young people to understand and manage their emotions; promoting intercultural emotional intelligence; and fostering peer connection, dialogue, and mutual respect across cultures.
The project was designed to achieve:
- A safe, inclusive environment for exploring emotional well-being through intercultural methods.
- Development of intercultural emotional intelligence through the integration of diverse cultural perspectives on mental health.
- Promotion of dialogue, cooperation, and mutual understanding among youth from diverse backgrounds
Project Objectives
- Equip participants with practical mental health tools, including mindfulness and creative self-expression.
- Foster awareness and normalise conversations around mental health.
- Provide strategies to manage stress, anxiety, and emotional challenges.
- Enhance intercultural emotional intelligence through diverse cultural practices.
- Strengthen leadership, critical thinking, and communication skills.
- Celebrate cultural diversity through sharing traditions and personal experiences.
Activities
The core activity of the project was the youth exchange, held from 08 to 16 March 2026 in Geesthacht, Hamburg, Germany. It served as a platform for intercultural dialogue, peer learning, and collaborative exploration of emotional well-being.
Participants engaged in a variety of structured and interactive activities designed to create a holistic learning experience combining personal development with intercultural exchange:
- Team-building and group integration activities foster trust, cooperation, and a safe learning environment.
- Workshops on emotional well-being, focusing on emotional awareness, resilience, and self-regulation.
- Creative workshops exploring emotional expression through art, music, and participatory methods.
- Interactive storytelling sessions for sharing personal experiences and cultural perspectives.
- “Cultural mapping” workshops examining diverse approaches to mental health and community healing.
- Outdoor activities for emotional balance through movement and nature-based reflection.
- Daily reflection sessions allow participants to evaluate learning and share insights.
- Final evaluation session to gather feedback and measure overall project impact.
Project Results/Outcomes
The implementation of the R.E.L.A.X. Project generated significant positive outcomes for both participants and partner organisations. Through a blend of non-formal learning, intercultural exchange, and creative facilitation, the project contributed to personal development, intercultural understanding, and long-term capacity building.
Participants completed the youth exchange with enhanced emotional intelligence, stronger intercultural awareness, and a greater sense of personal agency — equipped to apply their learning in everyday life and within their local communities.
- Increased Emotional Intelligence and ResilienceParticipants developed practical tools to better understand and manage their emotions. Through workshops and reflection activities, they improved self-awareness and strengthened their ability to cope with stress and emotional challenges in both personal and social contexts.
- Improved Intercultural UnderstandingParticipants gained a deeper appreciation of cultural diversity in approaches to mental health and emotional well-being. Exposure to different perspectives fostered empathy, tolerance, and mutual respect among participants from diverse backgrounds.
- Enhanced Creativity and Self-ExpressionThrough creative methods such as art, music, and storytelling, participants explored new ways to express emotions and process experiences. These approaches supported emotional release and encouraged innovative thinking.
- Empowerment and Leadership DevelopmentParticipants were encouraged to take ownership of their learning and actively contribute to group processes. Many developed leadership, communication, and facilitation skills, positioning them as ambassadors for mental health awareness in their communities.
- Strengthened Peer Relationships and Social InclusionThe project fostered strong interpersonal connections among participants. By working and living together in an inclusive environment, participants reduced stereotypes, built lasting friendships, and developed a sense of belonging and social cohesion.
