In a city as vibrant and diverse as Hamburg, the power of creativity has become one of our most powerful tools for fostering integration, connection, and a sense of belonging. Over the past few months, our organization has been hosting regular painting workshops specifically designed for migrants and refugees—safe and welcoming spaces where artistic expression serves as a pathway to community building, healing, and hope.
What began as a simple idea has now grown into one of our most impactful initiatives.
A Space for Expression and Freedom
Each workshop is facilitated by a skilled trainer who guides participants while allowing complete creative freedom. There are no rules, no expectations, and no barriers. Every participant is encouraged to express themselves in their own unique way.
This freedom has proven especially meaningful for newcomers who may still be navigating the challenges of adapting to a new environment. Painting provides a language beyond words—a way to express emotions that can be difficult to articulate in a new culture or language.
Building Friendships Through Shared Creativity
One of the workshop’s most beautiful outcomes has been the friendships that naturally emerge. As participants sit side by side, exchanging colors, ideas, and stories, they begin to discover common ground. Laughter fills the room, conversations flow more easily, and many leave not only with a piece of art but with new connections.
We have witnessed migrants from different countries, cultures, and age groups forming genuine bonds through this shared creative experience. These relationships extend beyond the workshop, strengthening social cohesion and fostering a sense of belonging within Hamburg’s multicultural fabric.
A Growing Community of Confidence and Joy
For many participants, the workshop is more than an art session—it is a place to regain confidence.
