Come to ‘Present Sounds: Sudan’ on Saturday, 5 October, at the district studio Kulturwohnzimmer!

As part of the Harburg Music Night, we invite you to a varied program from 5 to 10 pm. You can expect numerous music acts, films, art, panel talks with great artists, culinary delights, and interactive activities.

This evening, prepared by our partner community over the past few months, will give an insight into the richness of Sudanese culture and celebrate Harburg’s cultural diversity together as what it is for us: an exceptionally constructive and creative potential that deserves much more recognition.

Local musicians will provide an insight into the musical diversity of the Harburg district in German, English, Arabic and Spanish, accompanied by hip-hop beats and gentle guitar sounds.

The main acts on this evening are two notable bands who will take us on a journey into the captivating soundscapes of Sudanese-African music:

The Otaak Band features Miguel Merino on the tanbur, a classical Sudanese lyre.

Hassan El Malik & the Sun Blues Band. With the oud, they also place a unique traditional instrument at the center of their music and present blues music for us on the Sudanese pentatonic scale, keeping with the theme ‘On the oud through the world.’

Another special highlight is that the event is part of an international collaboration with the ‘Present-Sounds: Sudan’ edition in Kampala, Uganda.

After screening the short film ‘Nile Drums,’ we welcome director Fox to the panel talk via live stream from Uganda. Moderated by the Sudanese photographer, filmmaker and human rights activist Eythar Gubara, a short exchange with the musician Miguel Merino and the artist Niels Kasiske will focus on the current situation in Sudan, the challenges and hopes, the importance of art and culture, and the country’s rich cultural heritage.

Both events (in Hamburg and Kampala) will be networked live, and during the breaks, parts of the program will be alternately presented in the live stream.

During the breaks, there will be plenty to discover, with snacks and discussions, until the evening gradually draws to a close with a joint jam session from 10 pm.

We look forward to having you spend this extraordinary evening with us!
