InBuddy — Settlement, Integration
& Everyday Life
Starting over in a new country is never easy. For Ukrainian refugees — especially students, young people, and career starters — navigating Germany's administrative systems, bureaucratic processes, and financial realities can feel overwhelming. InBuddy is Horizon Resource Network's peer support programme designed to change that.
The Programme
What is InBuddy?
InBuddy connects newly arrived Ukrainians in Hamburg with "Horizon Buddies" — people who have already established themselves in Germany and are ready to share what they know. Through one-on-one buddy relationships and a series of themed workshops, participants build the knowledge, confidence, and connections they need to settle in and thrive.
Finances
Bank accounts, benefits, and everyday budgeting
Bureaucracy
Authorities, registration, and official documents
Self-care & mental health
Wellbeing, resilience, and finding support
Language & culture
German practice, city life, and a sense of belonging
The Buddy Role
What does a buddy do?
A buddy's role is as individual as the person they support. There is no fixed script — buddies and newcomers work out together what support is most meaningful and what activities they want to share.
Practical support
- Accompanying newcomers to local authorities
- Opening a bank account
- Organising studies or training
- Searching for jobs
- Practising German language
Social & everyday life
- Exploring Hamburg together
- Sightseeing and leisure activities
- Learning German culture and customs
- Building new friendships and contacts
- Discovering new places in the city
Regular buddy meetings
We organise regular group meetings, game nights, and excursions that are open to everyone in the programme. These gatherings are a natural space to get to know new people, exchange contacts, and build community. Buddy pairs can also meet independently at any time. After the first group meeting, you are free to organise your own schedule or continue joining us at arranged events.
Impact
Why InBuddy matters
InBuddy is more than practical help. It is about building real connections and creating conditions where newcomers can participate fully in Hamburg's social and civic life.
For newcomers — greater social participation, stronger self-efficacy, and the sense of not having to figure everything out alone.
For buddies — an opportunity to give back, develop intercultural competence, and form connections that often last well beyond the programme.
Need a buddy — or want to become one?
We welcome both newcomers and experienced residents. Get in touch and we will find the right match for you.
