Doctoral Summer School

Promoting academic excellence and social integration of Doctoral candidates and researchers.

Current research findings indicate that social integration plays a decisive role in the success of doctoral students and researchers with migrant background. Insufficient social interaction is cited as a major reason for many migrants in Germany dropping out of doctoral studies.

For this reason, we partnered with Dr. Adekunle Adedeji, Prof. Dr. Johanna Buchcik and Stella Kaltenbach of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW) to organize the African-German Doctoral Summer School for the first time.

The Summer School features a series of workshops, capacity-building training, panel discussions, and social tours to facilitate the academic excellence and social integration of the participants.

The Summer School brought together 20 doctoral students and early career researchers with an African background from various disciplines such as natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, humanities and health sciences.

The 1st African-German Doctoral Summer School ended with a Business, Career and Empowerment Dinner at Afrotopia, which helped to foster professional networking and valuable connections among the participants. The Participants were issued the certificate of participation.

The project partners are the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW), the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and Horizon Resources e.V.

The project was co-financed by the Hamburg Research Academy (HRA) and the Hamburg Social Welfare Authority.

The African-German Doctoral Summer School is an interdisciplinary Doctoral Summer School that aims to facilitate academic and social exchange that supports participants’ current research, enhances their sociocultural integration and prepares them for further careers. The Summer School is open to Doctoral candidates, students and early-stage post-docs with an African background or researching on/about Africa in Germany, including Doctoral candidates with a migration background (internationals). Highly motivated Master’s students who desire to pursue their Doctoral degree are also welcome to apply! The Summer School takes place annually in Hamburg, Germany.
